If you’re already at Vorderer Gosausee, don’t stop there. The real magic starts when you hike deeper into the valley.

Follow the trail past Gosaulacke and continue toward the Hinterer Gosausee. It’s about 6 km one way – a walk that’s a bit steep, with some elevation gain. I saw families with kids, hikers with dogs,

And when you finally get there – wow. That lake is a hidden gem. Fewer crowds, clear water, open skies, and cows grazing freely.

Right next to the lake is a small, cozy hut – the Hinterer Holzmeisteralm.

It was a pleasant surprise here. Here one would expect a super high-altitude surcharge and the pleasant environment and prices, nice service, and wonderful swimming in the lake…what more could one wish for after an almost two-hour walk? Moreover, the surroundings are absolutely amazing. Up to the neck in water with a view of the glacier on the opposite hill, plus the prospect of an amazing soup, a priceless experience 😉

I definitely recommend stopping by this snack bar if you’re walking around. They have delicious sandwiches, great desserts, and most importantly, a beautiful view of nature.

Great food and a magical place. The nature here is beautiful. You can swim in the lake and have something good to eat and drink. And you will also come across a herd of cows.

  • Weather changes fast. Pack a light rain jacket or windbreaker.
  • Go early. You might get the place to yourself.
  • No reservation needed – I’ve never waited for a seat.
  • Carry some cash – Card payments aren’t always accepted.
  • Want more adventure? Continue to the Adamekhütte for a full-day hike.

📍 Location: At the west shore of Hinterer Gosausee
📞 Contact: The hut does not have an official website. Usually, no phone contact is available. It’s best to just hike in.

If you’re lucky, you’ll meet Lisa, the friendly hut keeper, or her team. They really do make you feel welcome.
