Hallstatt offers a wide range of hiking opportunities, from leisurely walks to more challenging routes. Each highlighting the stunning beauty of the Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut region. 1. Easier Hikes in Hallstatt Alps:

• Panorama Trail: Starting from Hallstatt’s main square, this 6 km family-friendly hike takes you past the Heritage Hotel, up Kirchensteig, and along the Gaiswandweg to the Rudolfsturm. The trail offers panoramic views of Hallstatt and ends with a relaxing meal at the Rudolfsturm restaurant. A short detour brings you to the Skywalk for more breathtaking views.
• Echerntal and Waldbachstrub Waterfalls: This 3-hour walk is ideal for those seeking serenity. The route leads through the romantic Echern Valley, showcasing waterfalls, rapids, and tranquil views. For a longer hike, you can continue to the Glacier Garden, which is another 30 minutes from the waterfalls.
• Lake Hallstatt Circular Walk: This 23 km trail around Lake Hallstatt is moderately challenging and takes about 6.5 hours. It offers beautiful lake and mountain views.
• Koppental trail – a wonderful hike through the Koppental Valley where the wild Koppentraun River flows. Within half an hour from Bad Aussee, we crossed a pedestrian bridge to reach village of Sarstein, where the charming houses and stunning Alpine views made us feel instantly at home. Continuing along the road, we encountered the Schutzhütte Koppental after about 1.5 hours, where we enjoyed some homemade drinks and a quick snack. Refreshed, we pressed on, passing a wooden chapel and an old railway tunnel, remnants of a past flooded by a major disaster. After about 2.5 hours, we reached Obertraun, where the children had a blast at the playground and swam in Hallstatt Lake. Finally, we wrapped up our adventure with dinner at the lovely Seecafe before taking the train back to Bad Aussee, grateful for the serene beauty of the valley and eager to return for more outdoor exploration.

2. Advanced Hikes in Hallstatt Alps:

• Simonyhütte Hike: A demanding full-day hike (10 hours) that starts in Hallstatt and takes you through the Echerntal Valley, past the Glacier Garden, and up to the Wiesberghaus and Simonyhütte. Staying overnight at the Simony Hut is an unforgettable for sunset and sunrise.
• Radltal Trail: This challenging 8-9 hour hike connects Hallstatt to Gosau and passes through Gosau Rossalm. It requires stamina and careful planning. However, hikers are rewarded with solitude and stunning mountain landscapes along the way.

Our 4-day adventure took us from Gosau to Adamekhütte, then on to Simonyhütte with stunning alpine views along the way. We reached Krippenstein and Five Fingers lookout before ending our journey in the village of Hallstatt.

3. Scenic & Historical Hikes in Hallstatt Alps:

• Brine Trail: A historical hike along the world’s oldest active pipeline, covering 30 km from Hallstatt to Ebensee. It’s temporarily closed between Hallstatt and Bad Goisern due to rockfall.
• Plassen Hike: Starting from Hallstatt, this route leads up to the Plassen. Beloved mountain home to the locals, offering spectacular views of the Hallstatt region and a glimpse into its deep history.

For families and casual hikers, the area provides plenty of easy trails, while experienced hikers can take on the high mountain paths with rewarding views and unique natural wonders. 2. Krippenstein in the Hallstatt Alps

Krippenstein rises to an elevation of 2,108 meters and is part of the Dachstein subgroup. The mountain provides breathtaking views of the Dachstein glacier. From the Five Fingers platform, you can gaze down at Hallstatt lake and the village below.. You can reach Krippenstein by hiking or taking the Krippenstein cable car, which takes you to a plateau near the summit. In addition to hiking, Krippenstein boasts a ski resort and cross-country ski trails.

3. Plassen Peak in the Hallstatt Alps

Plassen, standing at 1,953 meters, is located just behind Hallstatt. This mountain offers unique views of the Salzkammergut region, particularly Lake Hallstatt and Lake Wolfgang. Trekking from Hallstatt or Gosau demands physical strength. However, for an easier option, take the Salzberg cable car. It brings you to Hallstatt’s high valley, where you can start your hike from a more accessible point.

4. Schneidkogel in the Hallstatt Alps

Another notable peak is Schneidkogel, reaching 1,551 meters. Also part of the Dachstein subgroup, this mountain provides stunning vistas of the Lake Hallstatt and Dachstein glacier. Hikers can access Schneidkogel from Hallstatt. Hoher Sarstein – standing at 1,975 meters, sits on the east site of Hallstatt lake . This mountain offers beautiful views of both Lake Hallstatt and also Lake Wolfgang. Hikers can access Hoher Sarstein from either Obertraun or Strobl.

A short, scenic hike through the valley takes you to Hallstatt’s lesser-known yet remarkable waterfalls. This hidden attraction provides an escape from the crowds and immerses you in breathtaking scenery.

What You Should Know Before Visiting the Hallstatt Waterfalls

Hallstatt’s waterfalls rank among the most beautiful in Austria, nestled in the enchanting Echerntal Valley. The best times to visit are late spring and summer, especially after rain, when the waterfalls shine their brightest. While the trails remain open year-round, they may close during heavy snow or ice. The paths accommodate individuals, groups, and pets, ensuring an accessible adventure for everyone.

Schleierfall (Hallstatt Waterfall)

Schleierfall, meaning “veil fall,” is a stunning waterfall that cascades down 140 meters. It is framed by a quaint farmhouse, creating a picturesque scene. The waterfall’s source lies higher up on the Salzberg at an altitude of 1,050 meters.

To begin your journey, head to the Echerntal parking area. Take the path to the left of the river, following its course. After a brief 15-minute walk, you’ll reach Schleierfall.

As you continue along the trail, you’ll encounter a hole in the mountain known as “Eulenloch” (Owl’s Hole). The origin of this name is unclear, but historical writings suggest it may have been associated with mining activities.

Waldbachstrub Waterfall

The trail continues back to the Waldbach River, leading you to two viewing points of the Waldbachstrub waterfall. Surrounded by dense trees and a flowing river, this hike is a treat for nature lovers. The path concludes with a few steps leading to the final viewing platforms. From here, you can admire the Waldbachstrub waterfall, which drops heavily for about 20 meters, with a total height of around 80 meters.

Accessing Hallstatt Waterfalls

If you enjoy hiking, you can reach the waterfalls from Hallstatt in about an hour to an hour and a half. For a more accessible option, drive to the car park at the start of Echerntal. From there, several trails lead to the waterfalls, with a 30-minute walking time from the car park.

Follow the trail along the left side of the river to first spot Schleierfall. Continuing on, you’ll discover the impressive Dürrenbach waterfall, and if you’re up for it, you can take a short detour to the valley’s end where the three waterfalls meet.

Mühlbach Waterfall

Located on the Mühlbach River, the Mühlbach waterfall is easily visible from various points in Hallstatt. It consists of several smaller waterfalls and can be spotted from the town center, near the museum, or while hiking up to the Rudolfsturm or salt mines.
