Hinterer Gosausee – My Favorite Lake in Austria

There’s something about Hinterer Gosausee that makes you want to come back. My first trip to Hinterer Gosausee was in late April, when the trail was still covered in snow. A digger was clearing the path, and I couldn’t help but be captivated by the wild beauty ahead. The excavator was clearing the path by the lake and I couldn’t help but be captivated by the wild beauty before us.

I knew right away that I had to go back. I returned with my family and the beauty of the lake left us all in awe. It was last August when I was there again with my coworkers. When we arrived, the lake was sparkling in the late afternoon light – a peaceful reward for the effort. We jumped in the water and swam in the lake for a good hour, looking at the mountains. After swimming, we continued hiking until nightfall to the Adamekhütte and the next days Simonyhütte and 5 fingers.

Hinterer Gosausee is more than just a beautiful place. It is a destination that invites you to slow down, enjoy the view and experience something unforgettable.

1. Where Is Hinterer Gosausee and How Do You Get There?

To reach Hinterer Gosausee, start at the trailhead near the Gasthof Gosausee. The 6 km hike with about 240m elevation gain is suitable for families, though it can be a bit long, so take your time and enjoy the incredible scenery. The trail strikes the perfect balance between a manageable challenge and a rewarding experience, making it ideal for a peaceful walk or a family adventure.

Seasonal Access

  • From May to late October, the trail to Hinterer Gosausee is accessible, depending on the first snowfall. In winter, the path beyond Vorderer Gosausee is closed due to snow, making the lake unreachable during this time.
  • Spring & Summer: The trail is open, and the lake sparkles with vibrant greens and blues. It’s the perfect time for a scenic hike and to enjoy the calm surroundings.
  • Autumn: The changing leaves offer a stunning mix of colors, creating a magical atmosphere. It’s a beautiful time to visit and soak in the mountain scenery.

No matter when you visit, the beauty of Hinterer Gosausee will stay with you long after you leave.

2. The Hike to Hinterer Gosausee – Trail Details & What to Expect

Easy Start Near Vorderer Gosausee

The hike begins with a flat and scenic trail right beside Vorderer Gosausee. It’s beginner-friendly and offers beautiful views of the lake and Dachstein Glacier. A perfect way to ease into your walk.

Forest Paths and Wooden Bridges

As you move away from the lake, the trail leads into forest sections. Expect a few small wooden bridges, tree-lined paths, and a peaceful atmosphere. The elevation remains gentle, making it enjoyable for all ages.

Gosaulacke – Halfway to Hinterer Gosausee

Hinterer Gosausee - Gosaulacke

About halfway, you’ll reach Gosaulacke, a seasonal lake that reflects the peaks above when full. Even when dry, it’s a calm and scenic place to rest.

Stop at Holzmeister Alm

Don’t miss a quick break at Holzmeister Nieder Alm. It’s a rustic hut with refreshments and lovely alpine charm. At the end of trail by Hinterer Gosause is Holzmeister Alm and offers views and traditional food.

Quieter Trails, Fewer People

The further you hike, the fewer people you’ll meet. The crowds from the Vorderer lake disappear, replaced by mountain silence and birdsong. It’s a wonderful contrast.

Hinterer Gosausee

At the end of the valley, you’ll arrive at Hinterer Gosausee. Surrounded by cliffs and dense forest, it feels remote and serene. It’s a spot not many tourists reach — and that’s exactly what makes it special.

3. Arriving at Hinterer Gosausee – What Makes It So Special

Hinterer Gosausee

Crystal-Clear Water and Alpine Views

When you finally reach Hinterer Gosausee, you’ll understand why it’s worth the hike. The lake is crystal-clear, often reflecting the jagged peaks around it. Alpine backdrops, quiet forests, and clean mountain air create a setting that feels untouched.

Pure Nature – No Crowds

Unlike Vorderer Gosausee, there are no cafés, no souvenir shops, and no crowds here. Just you, the lake, and the sound of the wind through the trees. It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down.

Ideal Spot for a Picnic or Quiet Break

Bring some snacks and water — this is the perfect place for a picnic. Whether you stretch out on a rock, sit by the water, or just close your eyes and listen, Hinterer Gosausee is made for quiet moments.

A Lake for All Seasons

The lake changes with the seasons. In spring, you’ll find wildflowers along the trail. Early summer often brings snowy peaks in the distance. Autumn covers the valley in rich golden and red colors. Every time of year offers something different — and beautiful.

4. Going Further – My Hike from Hinterer Gosausee to Adamekhütte and Glacier Views

Adamekhütte

A Steep But Worthwhile Climb to Adamekhütte

After reaching Hinterer Gosausee, my friends and I decided to keep going — and I’m so glad we did. The trail to Adamekhütte was definitely tougher, with steep climbs and rocky sections. But with every step, the views got better and better.

We passed alpine meadows, crossed meltwater streams, and had that constant backdrop of the Dachstein Glacier getting closer. It felt like we were walking into a different world — colder, quieter, and completely breathtaking.

Adamekhütte – One of My Favorite High Alpine Huts

When we finally reached Adamekhütte, it felt like we’d earned something special. The hut sits high above the valley, surrounded by cliffs and ice. We had a warm meal, stretched out on the sun terrace, and just took in the silence. No cell signal, no distractions — just mountains.

Tips If You Plan to Go

This part of the trail is no longer easy-going — you’ll need good shoes, a head for heights, and a bit of stamina. But if you’re up for it, I can’t recommend it enough. It was one of the highlights of our whole trip.

5. Reviews of Hinterer Gosausee

The walk to the back Gosausee takes about 2 hours and is a bit more challenging in places. Sturdy shoes are recommended. The lake is beautiful and definitely worth the effort. You can find a lot of grazing cattle along the way. At the very back is the “Holzmeisteralm” with excellent food.

Oh my goodness, what a place! Truly one of the most majestic sights on the planet! But be warned: the hike up there is gruelling. I’m a 35 year old who plays amateur football at a high level so I am not unfit and it was challenging. The majority is steeply uphill and punishing on amateur walkers. And it is not a short walk, taking a solid 45 mins from the main lake at Gosausee. Take lots of water and snacks for energy. But oh boy is it worth it once you get to the top. Stunning landscapes, a gorgeous smaller lake, and a huge feeling of accomplishment! Truly one of the highlights of our 6 week holiday in Europe.
