Historical significance of Hallstatt Market Square – Marktplatz

The Hallstatt Marktplatz is a place with a rich history that dates back to the early days of the town. The square was once the center of trade and commerce in Hallstatt, and it played a crucial role in the town’s development. In the early days, the market square was used for trading salt, which was the main source of income for the town. Salt mining in Hallstatt dates back to the Bronze Age, and it was the main source of wealth for the town for centuries. The market square was also a hub of economic activity, where people exchanged goods and services.

Over time, the market square became the center of social life in Hallstatt, and it was where people gathered for celebrations, festivals, and other events. Today, the market square remains a vital part of Hallstatt’s cultural heritage, and it continues to be a place where people come together to celebrate and enjoy the best of what this charming town has to offer.

Architecture and design of Hallstatt Market Square – Marktplatz

Hallstatt Square is a beautiful example of traditional Austrian architecture. With colorful buildings that date back to the 16th century. The buildings are made of wood and stone. They feature intricate carvings and decorations that are unique to the region. The square is dominated by the Seehotel Grüner Baum and right next to the iconic church of the city. This is a popular attraction for visitors to Hallstatt.

There are a few cafes and restaurants on Market Square. Many have outdoor seating with stunning views of the square. These cafés and restaurants provide a place to relax and soak up the atmosphere of the marketplace over a cup of coffee or a traditional Austrian meal.

1. Central Fountain

The central fountain is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists. The fountain provides refreshment on hot days, in addition, you can sit on a nearby bench and possibly take beautiful photos and selfies.

2. Statue der Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit – column of the Holy Trinity

There is a column next to the fountain in the main square. The plague column of the Holy Trinity is not as solemn and representative as in Vienna. Here it is small – to the tiny Hallstatt, but you can see the baroque style. All around beauty and joy for the eyes. Colorful houses with miniature cute balconies decorated with lush plants.

3. Das Dirndl – Hallstatt’s official everyday costume

Das Dirndl – Rebecca Schilcher designed Hallstatt’s official everyday costume.
“Your dirndl” – as she likes to call it – was included in the costume folder of the Upper Austrian Heimatwerk in November 2016. The coloring was inspired by the great fire of 1750 that destroyed the entire center: “The gray body symbolizes the ashes, pink stands for the fire and blue characterizes the serenity of the people of Hallstatt that was needed for the reconstruction…”

At the age of 15 I worked as an intern at a fashion school in Hallstatt in a dirndl tailoring shop. After many years in the costume department of the Salzburg State Theater and the Salzburg Festival, I happened to have the opportunity to take over this business in 2016. I am a convinced dirndl wearer and my motto is:
“The more reduced a dirndl is, the more casual and natural it is to wear. Mine are plain and simple, without any frills, but their fabric combinations and patterns have an effect – which can sometimes be a bit unusual.”

  • We never though of finding such an amazing Dirndl shop in such a tourist place. But we did. This place is everything you need if you want to buy a drindl. The owner is so friendly and nice. She explains you everything, because she does the drindls by herself. She has some very high quality products and made with so my love and professionally. And prices are better than other non-touristic places.
  • I find the small dirndl shop very charming and with a nice, professional owner, shopping is really fun!

4. Zur Ruth – Hallstat beer at market square

If you want to mingle with the locals in Hallstatt, go to “Zur Ruth“. The Marktbeisl in the historic marketplace is considered a small gastronomic unique with great entertainment value. Here, locals discuss news. Often with a glass of “Hallstatt Beer”. In hand, which you only get freshly tapped from a barrel in Marktbeisl. And nowhere else.

Marktbeisl’s extraordinary setting is due to the history of this iconic restaurant: Ruth Zimmermann once operated her tailoring workshop here for many decades. Her workshop used to be where today the tailor’s salon with its five tables shows full understanding for dehydrated guests. She received her customers in today’s bar. Many stayed with the hospitable lady longer than was really necessary. At some point, clever Ruth decided to turn her customers’ thirst into a virtue and officially serve them. Over time, the gastronomic success was so great that Ruth moved her tailoring studio entirely to the adjacent premises.

Many years later, in 2011, Markus Derbl took over Markus Derbl from Ruth Zimmermann. Not much has changed since the old days. Fortunately! Hospitable women from Hallstatt still stand behind the small bar, and you can still get from the bar to the tailor’s salon by bending down a passage that is too low. The guest garden is also outside the front door on the historic market square. What is new, however, is that the iconic Hallstatt beer is on tap, much to the delight of many guests.

  • We have recently been here for a pizza break and it was very nice. Pizza was very big and flavorsome. Very reasonable prices too. The staff were very friendly and respectful. I highly recommend here if you are out an about and finding a nice place to eat out in Hallstatt
  • Good gluhwein at cheaper price than other places around town. Had the local beer which was good. Good service.
  • We came to Hallstatt in one of the rather good days when it wasn’t chilling cold but yet bit gloomy and wet especially towards evening as mountain clouds started layering over the town. At the time when we already froze we happened to hit this small cafe place, and I have to say it was a win choice! The place is tiny, but the space is very well compensated by being super-warm, having simple but delicious pizza and the most friendly and charming waitress girl. On top of that the bill was very affordable. So, highly recommend!
